|2008 ASA Annual Meeting|
The Sixty-sixth annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetics was held November 5-8, 2008, at the Clarion Conference Center in Northampton, Massachusetts. The program comprised some sixty-three papers in twenty-six sessions of (following the lead of last year’s program committee) varying size, and featured a Presidential address by Stephen Davies, a plenary presentation by the astrophysicist David Weinberg and sculptor Josiah McElheny, and a session in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Monroe Beardsley’s Aesthetics: Problems in the Philosophy of Criticism. Local arrangements were handled by Thomas Wartenberg and included generous support and receptions by all the colleges involved – Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Amherst. Saturday night saw a reception for Peg Brand’s exhibition at Hampshire College and the now-annual performance by Aesthetic Attitude. I’m grateful to the Dabney Townsend and the Program Committee – Sondra Bacharach, Anthony Cascardi, Whitney Davis, Kristin Gjesdal, Danny Herwitz, Gregg Horowitz, Deborah Knight, and Rachel Zuckert – for their hard work and sound advice.
