The Board of Trustees of the American Society for Aesthetics is pleased to announce that C. Thi Nguyen, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Utah Valley University, has accepted its invitation to serve as program chair for the 78th Annual meeting in Washington, DC, November 11-14, 2020. Nguyen, the author of Games: Agency as Art (forthcoming 2020, Oxford University Press), received his PhD from UCLA. UCLA. He previously served as chair of the ASA Diversity Committee and also served on the Program committee for the 2018 annual meeting.

Arthur C. Danto Memorial Lecture: Joyce J. Scott will deliver the Arthur C. Danto Memorial Danto Lecture on Thursday, November 12. She is known for her depictions in bead work of racially and politically charged subjects, drawing from several cultures, including Native American and African. She has said of her work, “I believe in messing with stereotypes. It’s important for me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home—even if it’s subliminal." Her lecture will be presented on Thursday, November 12 from 6:00-7:30 at the meeting location at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington, VA, followed by a reception. For more information: Click Here

Presidential Lecture: ASA President Susan Feagin will deliver the Presidential Address on Friday, November 13 at the meeting.

The submission deadline for papers and panels was January 15. If you are interested in volunteering to be a commentator or chair, please contact the program chair at

Lodging at the Conference Hotel

  • Our room rate is $139 (single or double).
  • The link to register at our rate will be available next spring to everyone on the program and all who pre-register.
  • We sought bids from many hotels in the greater Washington, DC area. The only way to get cheaper rates was to move far out into the suburbs. Many hotels won't bid on our meeting, as we are too small. Hotels in the center of the city want well over $200 per night. We asked for a bid from the Georgetown University conference center, but they wouldn't bid on our meeting, as we are too small for their facility.
  • Our hotel is much closer to the Washington Mall and the center of town than the Wardman hotel in far northwest DC used by the APA. A short trip on the Metro will take you into town in minutes.
  • Please look at the Metro map to see how convenient our location is:
  • For comparison purposes, the APA conference hotels for 2020: Eastern-$149; Central-$169; Pacific-$199

Tips for Saving Money

  • Register "early-bird" for the meeting at least 30 days in advance. You'll save $60 from the regular member rate and $30 from the student member rate.
  • Look for a roommate to share a double with two beds at the hotel. When the program is posted, see if you have friends attending. You are welcome to post on the ASA Facebook page if you are looking for roommates.
  • Use the Metro rail system to get to the meeting from Dulles International Airport ($9.30)
  • Use the free hotel shuttle to get to the meeting from Washington National Airport.
  • Bring a supply of plastic baggies. Scoop up food at the end of our three evening receptions and/or our luncheon meetings.
  • Hotel rooms all include a small refrigerator, coffee maker, and free wifi.
  • Check out economical restaurants in the neighborhood

Travel Options in the Metropolitan area

  • The Hotel runs a free shuttle bus from National Airport every 15 minutes
  • The Hotel also runs another free shuttle every 15 minutes to the Crystal City Metro stop
  • From Dulles International Airport, Metro now runs all the way to the Airport ($9.30)
  • From Metro, go three stops to the south to Old Town Alexandria
  • From Metro, it's a few short stops into the center of the District of Columbia
  • Map of the Metro System
