The American Society for Aesthetics is pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has approved up to a total of $5,000 to support travel and honoraria for ASA-sponsored aesthetics speakers at three diversity programs in the summer of 2019.

The programs are the Summer Program for Women in Philosophy at UC San Diego, the Summer Immersion Program in Philosophy at Brown University and the Rutgers Summer Institute for Diversity in Philosophy. The speakers will be selected through an open call for applications to ASA members, in which each indicates for which institutes they would like to be considered, with a brief statement of the proposed presentation. The deadline for application is February 15, 2019. (The complete CFA is included below.)

The selection of finalists to be made by an ad hoc committee appointed by the ASA President, with representation from the leadership of the Feminist Caucus and the Diversity Committee, with the final selection of speakers made by institute directors. Speakers in previous summers are Sondra Bacharach, A.W. Eaton, Jane Forsey, James B. Haile III, Shen-Li Liao, Anna Ribeiro, Mary Beth Willard, and Sarah Worth.

This will be the fifth year in which ASA has sponsored a speaker at the San Diego and Rutgers programs and the fourth year for ASA sponsorship at the Brown Institute. ASA's participation promotes the Society's interest in diversity in the profession and also gives ASA an excellent opportunity to introduce aesthetics to talented undergraduates who, for the most part, have had no experience with aesthetics.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The American Society for Aesthetics seeks applications to serve as a speaker on aesthetics at one or more of three institutes in the summer of 2019: (1) the Summer Program for Women in Philosophy at UC San Diego, July 22-August 1; (2) the 22nd Annual Rutgers Summer Institute for Diversity in Philosophy, July 21-26; (3) the Summer Immersion Program at Brown University, July 21-August 3, 2019. For each of the three institutes, the ASA-sponsored speaker will attend the Institute for two days, give a 2-1/2 hour presentation (including a question and answer period), and take meals with the students. The speaker will receive an honorarium ($400 at UCSD and Rutgers, $250 at Brown), plus travel, lodging, and meals at the institute site.

For more information on each institute, please consult their web sites:

Applicants to be the ASA speaker must be current members of the ASA. Applicants should send a current CV (or URL of a current CV) and a brief statement (no more than 750 words) of the proposed presentation.  In each case, presenters will be introducing aesthetics to undergraduate philosophy majors with little or no experience with aesthetics. Presenters also typically informally advise students about North American doctoral programs and opportunities in philosophy.

Applicants should clearly indicate which program(s) for which they would like to be considered. Applicants can ask to be considered for one, two, or three of the institutes, but only one application should be submitted. Sponsored ASA speakers at previous summer institutes are eligible, although priority will be given to well-qualified applicants who have not previously presented on ASA’s behalf. Applications should be sent by e-mail no later than February 15, 2019, to the Secretary-Treasurer at secretary-treasurer@aesthetics-online.org. A decision by ASA on finalists is expected no later than March 1 by an ad hoc committee appointed by the ASA President. The final speaker selection will be made by each respective institute director.
