We are very pleased to announce that Laura Di Summa-Knoop (William Patterson University), Michel-Antoine Xhignesse (University of British Columbia), and Javier Gomez-Lavin (University of Pennsylvania) will be the co-organizers of this meeting, with assistance from David Clowney (Rowan University). 

The Eastern Division of the American Society for Aesthetics will hold its 2020 meeting, in Philadelphia April 17-18, 2020, at the Notary Hotel (formerly the Courtyard Marriott).

The keynote speaker will be Sandra Shapshay, Professor of Philosophy at Hunter College and CUNY in New York. She will speak on "“Bodies of Stone and Steel: An Aesthetics of Monuments and Memorials”

CANCELLED: The Monroe Beardsley lecture will be delivered at the Barnes Foundation by Richard Eldridge, Charles and Harriett Cox McDowell Professor of Philosophy at Swarthmore College

$1200 (total) will be available for Irene H. Chayes Travel grants, from the American Society for Aesthetics, for papers presenters with no other access to travel funds. To apply, notify the organizers that you wish to be considered, and estimate your travel costs. Do not include this in your paper. The decisions regarding which presenters receive funds and for how much is made by the meeting organizers.

LODGING AT THE CONFERENCE HOTEL: The conference hotel is the Notary Hotel (formerly the Courtyard Marriott). This is our last year at this hotel, which has been substantially renovated. You will be provided with the link as soon as you register for the meeting. The deadline for booking at the conference hotel to get our rate: Thursday, March 26.


  • From the Philadelphia Airport: take the Regional Rail service to Jefferson Station/10-11th Street. ($6.75 each way; credit cards at fare machines at station). Walk west on Filbert two blocks to the hotel.
  • From the Philadelphia Arport via taxi: estimated $30-$50, depending on traffic
  • From 30th Street Train Station via subway: take the Market-Frankford subway line east to 13th St. Fare: $2.50 (cash only-exact fare)
