Monday, February 5, 2024
Posted by: Julie Van Camp
Following on the success of last year’s reading group, the ASA Diversity Committee (DivCom) invites you to participate in a reading group of Oliver Leaman’s Islamic Aesthetics. An Introduction, University of Notre Dame Press and Edinburgh University Press (2004). We envision meeting once every three weeks in the spring and summer this academic year (for a total of six times) to discuss the book. To introduce the topic, we are going to start with a recent overview of the field, Sheila S. Blair and Jonathan M. Bloom, “The Mirage of Islamic Art: Reflections on the Study of an Unwieldy Field”, The Art Bulletin, 85 (2003) 1, 152-184 | doi:10.1080/00043079.2003.10787065 Participants are responsible for acquiring their own copy of the Leaman book and Blair and Bloom article. Please note: We will be meeting on either Monday or Tuesday evenings (EST) this semester, starting on the week of February 26. Specifically, we are looking to gather on either - Monday evenings (8 - 10 pm EST) or
- Tuesday evenings (7 - 10 pm EST)
If you are interested in joining, please complete this When2Meet poll so that we can find the best time for everyone. If you have any questions, please email divcomasa@gmail.com. We plan to continue the reading group after this iteration—and we're open to suggestions for readings. We hope the year is starting off well for everyone.
