Aesthetics in the Academy
This page documents the activities of the American Society for Aesthetics
Committee on the Status of Aesthetics in the Academy.
The Committee was formed in 1996 to seek ways to increase the visibility
of aesthetics in philosophy and related disciplines such as English,
fine arts, and the academy at large.
In 1997 and 1999, the Committee sponsored panel at the Annual Meeting
of the ASA. In 1998 it surveyed philosophy departments about their offerings
and needs in aesthetics (the results are below). In response to the
results of the survey the Committee has published a Guide to Graduate
Aesthetics in North America and sponsored an NEH Summer Institute
on Art, Mind, and Cognitive Science, held at the University of Maryland in 2002.
