April 2-3, Philadelphia

The Eastern Division of the American Society for Aesthetics held its annual meeting at the Best Western Independence Park Hotel in Old City Philadelphia on 2-3 April. The meeting coincided with Temple University’s annual Monroe Beardsley Memorial Lecture, and with “First Friday,” the monthly occasion for gallery openings in the vicinity of the hotel. Approximately 50 people attended the meeting. Kirk Pillow (Hamilton College) served as Program Chair and handled local arrangements.

Sessions at the meeting covered a variety of topics in aesthetics: art and politics, the senses, narrative, the ontology of literary works, photography, Kant’s aesthetic theory, identification of art works, and aesthetic value, were among the subjects addressed.

Rita Felski (University of Virginia) delivered the Beardsley Lecture at Temple on Friday, April 2. Her paper, “Everyday Beauty,” considered the range of recent work by aestheticians and literary theorists recuperating beauty as a principal aesthetic value to be appreciated especially in daily life. At a plenary session on Saturday, 3 April, Michael Krausz (Bryn Mawr College) presented “Interpretation and Its Objects,” which was followed by a lively reception.

Saturday night many meeting participants gathered at Patou, a nearby restaurant, for fabulous French cuisine and a performance by Aesthetic Attitude. The jazz ensemble featured Phil Alperson, John Carvalho, Garry Hagberg, Howard Thompson, and Casey Haskins.
