October 26-28, Milwaukee

The 64th Annual Meeting of The American Society for Aesthetics was held from 26-28 October 2006 in Milwaukee. The meeting was hosted by Marquette University; the host hotel was the Hilton Milwaukee City Center.

Many thanks to the program committee – Curtis Carter, David Davies, John Gibson, Sherri Irvin, Michel Kelly, Alex Neill, Jenefer Robinson, and Larry Shiner – for their patience, hard work, good sense, and wise counsel.

The call for papers generated a healthy set of submissions. We received 60 papers and 9 panel proposals. In addition, program committee members were invited to create their own panel proposals. 30 papers were accepted for the program. The externally-generated panel proposals were ranked by all the committee members; we then sought slots for all the highly ranked panels.

We kept the main outlines of the format used for the two previous annual meetings, with morning paper/commentator sessions and afternoon panels. However, we ended up adding an additional rank of papers before lunch (so that there were four morning paper slots) and one rank of papers Saturday afternoon.

In addition to these sessions, the meeting featured a plenary address by film scholar David Bordwell (University of Wisconsin Madison), a Presidential Address by the Society’s outgoing president, Carolyn Korsmeyer (SUNY Buffalo), a Thursday night reception at the Milwaukee School of Art and Design, a Friday night reception at Marquette’s Haggerty Museum (special attraction: a reconstruction of Nelson Goodman’s multi-media piece Hockey Seen), and a Saturday morning tour of a private home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

We benefited greatly throughout the year from being able to post an assortment of items – the call for papers, the entire program, last minute changes and announcements, registration information – on the ASA website. Grateful thanks are due to Dom Lopes for managing this so efficiently. Special thanks are due to Curtis Carter and Sebastian Luft who handled Local Arrangements. They were eager to promote their city and offered us a wonderful set of options from which to choose in building the program.
